my father definitely will refer to the thick oxford dictionary for those words...but i'm in the X or Y era....so i just google...this one caught my attention...so am sharing it. sorry, creative writing is just not forte /fort/. :)

How many times have you heard people say something is not their “forte” and pronounce forte as /for tay/?

This mispronunciation has become so wide-spread that it’s on its way to establishing itself as an acceptable variation. The error has arisen from the fact that there are two “fortes” in English, each with a different pronunciation.

forte /for tay/
Adverb (or adjective) meaning “strong” or “loud.” This word comes into English from Italian and is used chiefly in a musical context. Ex. Play this measure forte /for-tay/.

forte /fort/
Noun meaning “strong point,” “strength.” This word comes into English from French. Ex. Housekeeping is not my forte /fort/.

INTERESTING TRIVIA: The word forte /fort/ can refer to the strongest part of a sword blade, i.e., the part nearest the hilt. The weakest part of the blade, the part between the tip and the middle, is called the foible. Just as a forte is a person’s strong point, a foible is a (minor) weakness. Ex. His chief foible is buying every new electronic gadget as soon as it comes out.

Two other French words that give some speakers trouble are cache and cachet.

Not long ago I heard an NPR announcer speak of a “cache of weapons.” She pronounced cache as /ka shay/.

The word cache is pronounced /kash/. A cache is a hidden hoard. It’s probably from the French verb cacher, “to hide.” Early explorers would hide food and supplies for the return journey. The hidden supplies were called a cache. Among the many place names left by French explorers in the state of Arkansas is that of the Cache River.

cachet /ka shay/ is from the same French verb. As a noun cachet is literally a stamp or a seal. Figuratively it has come to mean “approval.” Ex. The plans for the new sewer system carry the Mayor’s cachet. Cachet can also mean “mark of distinction.” Ex. Driving a Rolls bestows a certain cachet.

As a Doctoral student in UKM (at least for my batch), you are only required to submit 2 papers to journals and 2 papers to conferences. And the papers do not need to be published yet during the oral-exam or what we call the viva. The journals do not have to be neither international nor indexed. easy peasy ey?

But as an academician...it is very important to have published papers in indexed or good impact factors journals. This carry a big weightage for your annual key performance index...and of course for promotion...and today after almost 1 year, 1 of my paper has been accepted to be published in an indexed journal...for the first time...yeay me...it is my third paper in journals but the 1st in indexed one..alhamdulillah!!! insyaallah more to come....amiiiin.

Itulah tempoh yang aku ada kalau mengikut perancangan aku sebagai makhlukNya...kemudian aku harus kembali bekerja...perkembangan penulisan aku agak baik kerana telah berjaya menghantar dan memperoleh semula draf pertama bab keputusan...tetapi sebaliknya aku gusar sekarang

hati sangat bergelodak apabila penyelia aku mengutarakan soalan cepu emas yang sebenarnya juga bermain-main di ke ceruk yang paling belakang fikiran aku...yes i'm in denial...always. "saya pun tak pasti nak cakap cukup atau tidak untuk phD, sebab biasalah takde pengalaman lagi duduk dalam viva dan belum ada student phD yang dah habis (aku yang pertama lah...)"...hmm (dengan muka tenang dan suara kontrol).."kalau Dr kata macam tu maknanya tak cukup lah tu kot" aku meneka...(dalam hati nak menangis rasa....).."u jumpa la Prof J dulu...dia dah biasa dan banyak viva, dah banyak phD graduates..."

NVC2010

NVC2010 akan diadakan tak lama lagi. Kali ini ada penyertaan daripada kakitangan akademik UPM antaranya Dr. Nawal, Dr Raja Azmi dan mungkin beberapa nama lagi. Walaupun aku insyaAllah pada waktu itu tidak lagi berstatus pelajar UKM, penglibatan pada tahap yang sangat minimal tetap ada, terutama dalam mesyuarat teknikal dsbgnya.

Apapun, gambarajah dibawah ialah ketika NVC2007 yang lalu dimana penyertaan yang amat menggalakkan sehingga kami para ajk hanya dapat menghantar penyertaan secara poster sahaja.

Sesiapa berminat, nantikan jemputan penyertaan yang formalnya tidak lama lagi...

Alhamdulillah surat dah sampai dari KPT. Suratnya tarikh 6 April, kire efisien lah tu sampai selang 2 hari je ke rumah...bravo. Teruskan usaha-usaha bersih, cekap dan amanah ni. Tempoh asal ialah dari 4 Julai 2006 sampai 3 Julai 2009, tapi dah dilanjutkan ke 3 Disember 2009. Memang seperti dalam perancangan awal aku yang aku tampal kat dinding di ruang kerja aku di UKM. Semoga semua berakhir dengan baik, dengan kehendakMu ya Rabbi. Amin.

aah...sekejap sungguh masa berlalu...2008 aku rasa sangat pendek. baru sahaja aku melahirkan anak kedua penghujung disember 2007, tiba-tiba rasanya kami menyambut ulangtahunnya yang pertama hari natal yang lalu...

dah tak lama pula nak menjengah ke febuari...sekarang ini ialah semester akhir aku di sini, bumi bertuah ukm ini... sepatutnya...tapi jumaat ini aku sudah dijemput dekan majikanku untuk temubual 'mesra' berkenaan permohonan lanjutan cuti belajar aku...

sekarang ini aku sedang terkial-kial membaiki dan mengolah semula kertas kerja yang telah disemak oleh penilai-penilai jurnal HFM...usai membaiki yang satu lagi ke jurnal bertaraf asian saja. rasanya dah acap benar aku menulis, tapi kesalahan-kesalahn bodoh yang ketara masih jugak diulang, yang aku sendiri tau kebodohannya tatkala melihat semula baru-baru ini...mungkin hijab baru di angkat. teringat kisah..."jangan jadi bodoh di siniiiii" zaman asasi dulu. senyum.

dari minggu lepas sampai ke hari ini, aku masih dikecewakan...belum ada rezeki nak dapat data untuk ujikaji aku yang terakhir...sepatutnya...ikut rancangan aku manusia kerdil di bumiMu ni tuhan...kau yang menentukan. hikmahnya hanya Kau yang tau.

Kertas kerja ke Jurnal

Kertas kerja ku yang judulnya telah bertukar ke Understanding the Effect of Noise, Vibration and Seat Discomfort towards a Passenger’s Vehicle Driver through Self-Reported Survey akan diterbitkan tak lama lagi dalam Jurnal Teknologi (Tuhan je lah tau bile sebab hantar dah lama bangat, ini baru terima komen dari penilai; 3 penilai ya, tak cukup dua tu!).

Yang menariknya, salah satu penilai merujuk kepada blog ini, kerana post yang lepas ada memuatkan beberapa abstrak kertas kerjaku. Kepada penilai itu, terima kasih kerana sudi melawat blog saya, tapi kertas kerja itu belum diterbitkan di mana-mana jurnal atau penerbitan. Saya seorang yang beretika. Sebahagian dari manuskrip itu telah dibentangkan di beberapa konferens dalam dan luar negara, tapi bukan keseluruhannya, dan hanya menggunakan sebahagian daripada data. Juga sebagai makluman, manuskrip yang dihantar ke Jurnal IE itu telah ditolak. Terima kasih sekali lagi.

Abstract. An online questionnaire-based survey was conducted to gather information regarding driving discomfort of Malaysian passengers’ vehicle driver. The discomfort factors investigated were noise, vibration and driver’s seat. For the noise and vibration, it was found that women respondents feel more discomfort for vibration related factors while men respondents feel more discomfort for noise related factors. There was no significant difference between discomfort for noise and vibration during idle or accelerating conditions. Regarding driver’s seat discomfort, it was found that more respondents had experienced discomfort or pain at the upper back. The differences of discomfort responses for different body parts between men and women drivers were mainly caused by anthropometrical factor. Both men and women drivers experience noise, vibration and seat discomfort, however with different levels of sensitivity for different factors and body parts. From this study, no significant difference was found on overall discomfort between genders. Although it is self-reported, the result is in-line with the findings from the literatures.

Abstrak. Satu tinjauan berasaskan soalselidik atas talian telah dijalankan untuk mendapatkan maklumat berkenaan ketidakselesaan pemanduan kenderaan penumpang
pemandu Malaysia. Faktor ketidakselesaan yang diselidiki ialah hingar, getaran dan tempat duduk pemandu. Untuk hingar dan getaran, didapati bahawa responden perempuan lebih tidak selesa untuk faktor-faktor berkaitan dengan getaran manakala responden lelaki lebih tidak selesa untuk faktor-faktor berkaitan hingar. Tiada perbezaan ketara di antara ketidakselesaan untuk hingar dan getaran ketika pegun mahupun memecut. Berkenaan ketidakselesaan tempat duduk pemandu, didapati bahawa lebih ramai responden mengalami ketidakselesaan atau kesakitan di bahagian atas belakang. Perbezaan untuk respon ketidakselesaan bagi bahagian badan berlainan di antara pemandu lelaki dan perempuan terutamanya disebabkan oleh faktor antropometri. Kedua-dua pemandu lelaki dan perempuan mengalami ketidakselesaan akibat hingar, getaran dan tempat duduk tetapi dengan sensitiviti yang berbeza untuk faktor-faktor dan bahagian tubuh yang berlainan. Daripada kajian ini, tiada perbezaan ketara yang dijumpai untuk kesuluruhan ketidakselesaan di antara kedua-dua jantina. Meskipun ia berbentuk laporan kendiri, keputusannya adalah selari dengan penemuan daripada kajian-kajian literatur.

Aku sebenarnya dah suntuk…sebab ini dah semester 5. Sepatutnya ada 6 semester walaupun ada kelonggaran untuk menambah 2 semester lagi, harapnya tidaklah. Tapi akhir-akhir ini

kemalasan menebal, bulan Ramadhan yang mulia ini ku jadikan alasan untuk bekerja seadanya sahaja…adakah ini juga dikira dosa??? Ya Allah ampunilah hambaMu yang maha lemah ini. Aku mudah tergoda untuk meliar ke catatan-catatan menarik orang lain tentang kehidupan dan cerita mereka…ini semua salah/kelebihan internet.

Analisis untuk penilaian subjek menggunakan PKTK yang aku bangunkan dah pun selesai untuk kertas kerja yang belum tahu mana arahnya lagi…Tapi sekurang-kurangnya adalah hasilnya setelah membelanjakan lebih dari RM400 untuk dapatkan penilaian daripada tak sampai 30 subjek. Duit SLAB lah…terima kasih Kerajaan Malaysia kerana sudi menaja saya.

Mungkin juga sebab baru sahaja habis penat bergelumang dengan analisis Statistik (tu sebab mami bercita-cita anak sulung mami kena jadi ahli statistik! Dan belajar di Oxford Islamic Studies kat England tuh…angan-angan mami harap jadi kenyataan! Amiiin) dan SPSS untuk kerja PKTK tu, aku jadi malas untuk analisa data yang ku ambil jauh di UTM Johor nih…belanja pun besar, lebih RM1000 sebab bawa anak-anak dan bibik sekali…Tapi Prof. dengan baik hati benarkan aku buat tuntutan RM600 untuk penginapan…jadilah! Alhamdulillah..walaupun duitnya belumlah dapat lagi. Elok juga sebab mungkin nanti perlu duit lagi untuk buat penilaian subjek berkenaan getaran pulak. Syukur juga sebab PM Dr. Baba pun dah ada ramai RA dan pelajar Master baru yang boleh menolong aku; harapnya. InsyaAllah…man jadda wajada.

Abstract
A questionnaire-based survey was conducted to gather information regarding driving discomfort of Malaysian passengers’ vehicle drivers. The discomfort factors investigated were noise and vibration in the vehicle both during idle and accelerating conditions. In the final survey, there were 63 subjects. It was found that 37% voted for engine noise during idle as compared to 32% for engine noise during accelerating. Men were found to experience less discomfort than women drivers in most of the driving conditions investigated. At the same time, age difference showed a different trend of response.

ABSTRACT

This paper is the continuation from a previous study which evaluated vibration characteristics of a sedan car. The previous study measured vibration signals on-the-road while driving with different speeds over five road surfaces. This study will evaluate the same vibration characteristics of a lower end car which is categorized as compact car. The variation of the two cars will be compared. The evaluation method is based on British Standard BS 6841 (1987), involving the application of frequency weightings Wb, calculation of weighted root-mean-square acceleration or the component ride value and the calculation of estimated as well as the true vibration dose values. Initial study showed that vibration dose values increases as the speed rises. Rough road surfaces have higher vibration dose values than smooth road surfaces. On the same road, the weighted values of all the vertical axes vary by about two to one between the 2.0cc sedan and the 1.3 compact cars, and about two to one difference between values of smooth road surfaces and the values obtained on poor road surfaces.

Abstract
An anthropometrics study of Malaysian military cadets at Universiti Pertahanan Nasional Malaysia or National Defense University (NDU) was carried out. In the anthropometrics study, thirty-six human body dimensions were measured by using conventional measuring method. Later, the data collected were used in calculating the mean, percentiles, standard deviations and correlation coefficients of the Malaysian military cadets’ population in NDU. It was found from the study that both stature and weight significantly correlated with many of the body dimensions measured. Having done that, the Malaysian military cadets’ anthropometrics data were compared to anthropometrics data of civilian population in the developed countries. The authors found that Malaysian military cadets are significantly shorter and lighter especially for the 95th percentiles. On the other hand, when the data was compared to the data of civilian population in Malaysia measured by previous researchers in Malaysia, it was found that the differences in the thirty-six human body dimensions were not statistically significant except the weight.

Abstract

An online-based questionnaire survey was conducted to gather information regarding driving discomfort of Malaysian passengers’ vehicle driver. Forty subjects responded to the survey. The discomfort factor investigated in this on-line survey was on the driver’s seat discomfort. From the standard Nordic body diagram, it was found that 60% of the respondents had experienced discomfort or pain at the back; 56% discomfort or pain at the neck; and 44% discomfort or pain at the low back. In addition, the response for degree of discomfort on fourteen body parts showed that more than 30% of the respondents had experienced slight discomfort on their hands and wrist, lower legs, upper and lower back, shoulders, ankles and feet. Meanwhile, more than 20% of the respondents believed that their seats had caused them a lot of discomfort at their lower back, neck, hand and wrist. The survey response had also showed that more than 30% of the respondents felt their seat backrest contour and seat pan contour are inadequate, and more than 20% felt the backrest height and the neck rest are inadequate. In contrary, only 17% of the respondents felt their seat backrest height is too much. More than 14% felt that armrest and neck rest are improperly located. About 56% of the respondents had the opinion that the main problem in their seating systems are due to improper seat contour/shape and armrest and neck rest, and 46% are due to reach and legroom. This survey result is in-line with the findings from the literatures and men drivers were found to experience less discomfort compared to women drivers.

Relevance to industry

Subjective evaluation methods apart from objective evaluation methods are very much relevant to vehicle development process. A survey is a common step in the preliminary stage of the process. This study provides new findings to automotive industries as the respondents may represent the Asian car users especially from South East Asia.

UKM will hold a regional seminar entitled "The Regional Seminar on Computational and Experimental Mechanics (CEM), Advances in Malaysia Noise, Vibration and Comfort (NVC), Advanced Processes and Systems in Manufacturing (APSIM), Mathematical Science in Engineering (MSE) & Civilization of Regional Architecture (ARCH) 2007 on the 28-29th August 2007. This regional seminar will be expected to give good knowledge, experience and information benefits to UKM generally and specifically to the engineering faculty.

kaji selidik

dalam kebanyakan kajian ilmiah terutamanya peringkat doktor falsafah melibatkan kaji selidik. tapi dalam bidang 'kejuruteraan' tradisional, kajian soal selidik sangat tak relevan, tapi dalam 'kejuruteraan moden' yang banyak melibatkan kejuruteraan serentak atau 'concurrent engineering', pengurusan kejuruteraan 'engineering management' kejuruteraan industri dan seumpama dengannya, kajian soal selidik memainkan peranan yang besar kerana suara pengguna amat relevan dan terletak dia bahagian atas carta manakala kejuruteraan tradisional tadi yang akan melaksanakannya dan terletak di bawah carta...tapi jangan tak tau kebanyakan mereka yang daripada kejuruteraan tradisional ini akan memandang dengan ekor mata je kalau tak pun tersenyum sinis mendengarkan orang-orang kejuruteraan yang membuat soal selidik ini...dipandang remeh dan tak 'engineering' katanya..

aku sendiri ada membuat soal selidik pengguna dalam kajian awal atau pilot study ku, dan sebenarnya memang tak senang untuk dapatkan kerjasama daripada responden, yang beri kerjasama pula perlu ada peratus yang signifikan supaya boleh dipercayai...peratus kecil tertentu boleh menghilangkan kebolehpercayaan isu atau perkara ang dikaji atau dicadangkan...

semalam dan baru sebentar tadi aku baru sahaja menolong seorang kawan yang juga sama-sama belajar untuk mendapatkan maklum balas daripada 'target group' beliau...memang susah nak senang. bila dah dapat data yang banyak pula, satu hal lagi untuk analisis dan manipulasi data dan cadangan awal yang kita dah fikirkan...hmmmmm.

...semangat dan mood cuti raya cina masih terasa, sebab kebanyakan sekolah masih bercuti, dan paling penting sebab cik abg. sayang pun masih cuti..tapi sebab Prof. dah tetapkan mesyuarat kemajuan para penyelidik di bawah penyeliaannya pada 22 Feb. lalu, terpaksa jugalah pergi sekolah walaupun masih..errr agak malas..:D (bukan sikap yang baik untuk diikuti terutama bagi kanak-kanak bawah umur!!)..Nik sebagai R.O. makmal MEMS tiada untuk mencatat...jadi tanggungjawabnya tertanggung di bahuku...sebenarnya suka jugak tanggungjawab ni sebab kaedah yang bagus untuk kekal berjaga dalam mesyuarat di bilik yang sangat dingin hawanya. secara ringkasnya Prof. mengatakan aku dalam bentuk yang baik, kalau nak di terjemah secara langsunglah...yang mana sebenarnya Prof.bermaksud untuk mengatakan aku dalam laluan yang betul setakat ini...tapi dalam hati aku ketawa kecil...iye ke??? harapnya betul lah deria rasa Prof. tu...kalau disemak balik catatan ini...patutnya semester ini dah ke tahap focal theory...aku memang harapkan pesanan Prof. yang terakhir sebelum beralih kepada penyelidik seterusnya...beliau menetapkan hujung semester ini supaya kertas cadangan penyelidikan sebenar yang lengkap di hantar kepada beliau. tak tahulah apa nak jadi...aku sedar tentang kekritikalan fungsi masa yang berlalu dengan cepat dan kemajuan yang telah aku capai...memang tak ku sangkal kata-kata bukan senang nak senang...tapi senang betul untuk bersenang-senang walaupun tahu bebanan yang menimbun...errrgh! FOKUS!!!!!

#untuk catatan - catatan ini ditulis pada hari minggu di rumah mertua, yakni bukan masa prima khusus untuk belajar...:D

dah lama tak kemaskini laman ni...dan sebenarnya aku sendiri dah lupa 'janji' diri sendiri untuk memperkasakan bahasa ibunda (dan ayahanda..heheh) di laman ini...dah lama tak menulis di sini kerana kemajuan pembelajaran yang tak begitu memberangsangkan...susah sebenarnya untuk memfokuskan diri...siapa yang kata senang tu...sama ada dia tak pernah cuba atau dia memang bagus...:D ...aku sendiri..memang kurang bagus dalam hal 'mendisplinkan' diri ni...tapi tak dinafikan aku sememangnya cuba cuma mudah untuk terima alasan yang diri sendiri buat.

kalau diikutkan jadual yg aku sendiri buat, sepatutnya bulan ni didedikasikan untuk merancang dan menulis seteperinci mungkin kertas kerja untuk phD ku ini, supaya kemudiannya aku boleh mulakan kerja-kerja membiasakan diri dengan proses, kaedah dan ujikaji...tapi...ya ada TAPI disitu...masih belum selesai dengan kertas kerja CAIRNS nih...semangat baru teruskan usaha!!!!

Tahun baru menjelma dengan dugaan anak mengalami muntah-muntah dan cirit birit selama seminggu...Terbang seminggu sesi baru waktu di sekolah...tak dicampur dengan hari-hari yang dibazirkan sebelum raya haji, cuti krismas dan tahun baru...kasihan anak yang sakit...bila waktu cemas macam ni baru hati pun sama cemas memikirkan apa progress research ku...gelabah sungguh rasanya...hari pertama ke sekolah sesi baru tahun baru ni semalam pun...pagi tu terasa sesak dada...tapi bile menjelang tengahari tu dah mula buat perangai melayari internet...manusia memang mudah lupa...

Tengahari dapat panggilan PM Dr Baba. 2nd supervisorku. Dia menolak untuk isi borang laporan kemajuan untuk dihantar ke UTM & KPT...tunggu Prof Jai la pulak...kertas kerja yang dibentang hari tu di NVC 2005 kena diubahsuai hampir keseluruhan sebab hendak dimasukkan ke jurnal kejururuteraan keluaran khas...adeh..takdenye page yang tak merah...itu fokus hari ni dan mungkin esok...perbaiki kertas tu dan 'tutup buku' cerita kertas tu...tanak tgk lagi...lepas ni nak fokus phD ku ini je....fokus!fokus!fokus! perlu ke tidaaak????

As for my progress...slow..very slow but am still maintaining the everyday in touch with papers/book/lab work...currently i managed to prepare a set of questionnaire that has just been proof read by my English/language/research method Sifu Kak Jojo...she's too busy to start a blog she said....later will send it to my supervisors for their comment and approval. Saya tidak boleh melakukan sesuatu dengan sempurna mengikut jadualnya melainkan diizinkan Allah.InsyaAllah

1. Taat perintah Allah - jaga sembahyang 5 waktu dgn berjemaah.
2. Jangan tinggalkan usaha agama - iaitu tanggungjawab asas kita orang Islam dlm menyampaikan perkara hak serta buat kerja nabi - berdakwah. Lupakan dulu Mercerdes... (apply untuk student di UK :)
3. Yakin kena betul - yakin makhluk (supervisor) tak boleh buat apa tanpa izin Allah dan harap banyak kepada Allah lebih drp makhluk.
4. Strategi PhD - tumpu kepada journal rather than PhD thesis. Beliau gunakan journal dan conference papers utk compile thesis beliau.
5. Minta banyak pandangan orang lain dan share knowledge/chapter yg anda tulis - berkat datang dan kadang2 boleh cepatkan pemahaman, ideas, soalan2 luar biasa dan macamana nak tulis
6. Penulisan - start tulis daripada awal walaupun tak pandai dan grammar tonggang langgang. Kata beliau, yg penting idea dan rekod apa yang terfikir.

Saw PM Dr. Baba on Monday 2/10/2006 the first thing in the morning. His comments on the paper I sent to him a couple weeks back:

•Provide picture or diagram when discussing dimensions of driver’s anthrop
•Write short sentences
•Every mentioned quote must be in the reference including standards e.g. ISO or BS
•Must be specific e.g...in earlier/previous discussion…where??
•Improve the sentences, short, brief and easy to understand sentences
•Conclusion must be of your own based on the paper that you have written (no referencing).
a point that i missed from the book when i submitted the paper was do not send first draft to supervisor...make it a final draft.

From Phillips, E.M. and Pugh, D.S. (2000) How to get a Phd.:A handbook for students and their supervisors 3rd Ed. Open University Press, Buckingham

All together the book has 12 chapters; becoming a postgraduate, getting into the system, the nature of the PhD qualification, how not to get a PhD, how to do research, the form of a PhD thesis, the PhD process, how to manage your supervisor, how to survive in a predominantly British, white, male, full-time academic environment, the formal procedures, how to supervise and examine and institutional responsibilities University responsibilities. So people, as you can see the title
of the chapters are so relevant. Generally, in my point of view, nothing that they have written that are new to us. However, not until we read it that we realize how important this is and how true that is.
since i am returning this book to PTSL most probably today, i will write some points for my own reminder.

in becoming a post grad, it is important to be aware that we are under our own management. for me personally this is the foremost important. well you know us the multi-tasker...i try to go to school everyday...consistency, perseverance, diligence but not necessarily academically-brilliance (in time management yes). so people, we always looked up to PhD holders differently ..Yes or no?? Self-doubt is a guaranty...whoever has not experienced self-doubt during PhD undertaking please please tells me. For newbie’s, selecting your supervisor is very very important.

I mentioned in previous posts of becoming professional researcher (or did not?? forgot). The authors spelled out the meanings in very neat way...some of it; you have something to say that your peers want to listen to; you have a command of what is happening in your subject, master the techniques that are current and know their limitations, able to communicate data and be international. A task that is quite important that I haven’t done is to read others’ PhD theses and evaluate them for the degree of originality in their research which ahs satisfied the examiners. Also, you don’t want to do these; overestimate or underestimate what is required, have a supervisor who doesn’t know what is required, losing contact with the supervisor, not having a thesis to maintain (the arguments) and taking new job before completing (again so important to the self-confessed multi-tasker).

Research is a craft skill
yes not surprising as I have mentioned it does not depends on brilliance but diligence and etc. 1st is to watch and note down the practices, skills and techniques of established good researchers including your supervisor, 2nd is to practice and gain feedback and make sure it is not the first time you exercise the techniques. Another important thing is to consider the advantage of doing ‘testing-out’ research rather than exploratory or problem-solving type for the PhD. Testing-out type is a basic type in which we are trying to find the limits of previously proposed generalizations. Last but not least, try to get as much help as you can, consider electronic peer groups.

I would also like to remind myself about the many accepted definitions of originality for the award of a PhD (Francis 1976 & Phillips 1992 in Phillips & Pugh):
Setting down a major piece of new information in writing for the 1st time
Continuing a previously original piece of work
Carrying out original work designed by the supervisor
Providing a single original technique, observation, or result in an otherwise unoriginal but competent research
Having many original ideas, methods and interpretations all performed by others (in the direction of PhD)
Testing somebody else’s idea
Carrying out empirical work (that hasn’t been done before(thbdb))
Making a synthesis (thbdb)
Using already known material with new interpretation
Trying out something in this country that has previously only be done in other countries
Taking a particular technique and applying it in a new area
Bringing new evidence on old issues
Being cross-disciplinary and using different methodologies
Looking at areas that people in the discipline haven’t looked at before
Adding to knowledge in a way (thbdb)
AND
A thesis should not be any longer than it needs to be

Personally, I also like the suggested diagram as attached below (check it out at pg 88 of the book). Another reminder to me, deadlines are important, be realistic and try to achieve them, Set pseudo-deadlines to report to your supervisor or a peer as motivating device.

Lastly I would like to include some general expectations from a supervisor as a reminder to myself:
You must be independent
You must produce written work that is not just a first draft!!!! (Write, check, re-write and re-write, review and re-write x n times before submit)
You must see them regularly (early notice with issues to be discussed emailed at least few days earlier)
You must be honest with your progress
You must follow advices especially if you requested it
You have to be excited with your work
You must later on educate your supervisors as you have become the expert in the area

Read at least 400 papers

yes people...that is what being told by my supervisor...for this first semester...well the number can be quite frightening but its a relief for me to be told as such...which means it is not yet time for me to start doing any empirical work...phew. Its important really as it is a major part in a thesis which Phillips and Pugh (2000) called the background theory. A phD candidate must know well within the area he/she is working up to professional standard. Background theory majorly contributes in the literature review in the dissertation. LR has to be done in organized manner, interesting and useful to the readers, reveals trends in research activity, defines areas of theoretical and empirical weakness and must be justified with criticsm.

The other major parts are focal theory, data theory and last but not least contribution. However, i have to stop here to do what mommies hhave to do. Later folk.

human response to vibration

its been a while...hmmm i have to go somewhere very soon but i want to leave something here at least when i get back to this post, it could help me what i originally want to write about...

Progress has been down for few days...excuse : "managing the household" ;)

well...i read a topic on human response to vibration prepared by J.B.Morrison. I think it must be lecture notes for the undergraduates. human body is described as a complex mechanical system which consist of visco-elastic elements (reminds me of elastigirl). So as any mechanical system, it will give dynamic response to an externally imposed vibratory force. The response is affected by these factors;1. nature of the forcing vibration (i.e. frequency, amplitude and point of application),2. mechanical constants of the mech. system (i.e. body composition e.g. weight, tissue distribution, mass of organs, elastic and viscous properties of connective tissue), 3. the configuration (i.e. standing, sitting posture) and 4. the point at which the response of the system is measured (e.g. pelvis, head, hand).
Each element (organ) has its own natural or resonant frequency of vibration).So at different forcing frequencies, different element may be more or less affected...i.e. more prone to damage, pain, impaired performance or discomfort. The effects can be whole body vibration or segmental. The latter category transmits vibrations throughout the body e.g. car seat. The second category does not transmit significant acceleration or displacement to body segments beyond the certain element affected e.g. chain saw affects only the hand-arm complex system. Effcets can be categorized into mechanical e.g. tissue damage, physiological e.g. stress, increased cardiac output or psychological e.g. annoyance and impaired concentration.
.................what???? my computer logged off on its own? i've almost finish...something on system with damping ratio or fraction of critical damping, apparent mass which is measurement of the apparent mass at the seat divided by the acceleration of gravity in response to vertical vibration.

Anthropometry

i think this must be the 1st documented data relevant to anthropometry. anthropometry is coined from two latin words antropos meanings 'men' and metron meanings 'measure'. Da Vinci's petruvian man has been made famous recently by Dan Brown in his book entitled Da Vinci's code. A good read and understanding of what has been happening behind the establishment of protestant and its rivalry chatolics, in the new era after Jesus has been lifted to heaven although the Christians wrongly believed Jesus had been cruxified. Astaghfirullahalazim.

This is a modern figures depicting measures in standing postures suggested by Pheasant. Not just postures but also special body parts, most popular is the hand for tool and material handling and many works that being done using hands.

More advance is measurement taken using 3D opto-electric system...

anyway..what the fuss with this anthropometry...it may be a part of my research...as we are very lacking in anthropometry data let alone driver's anthropometry...so that's the basic...Dr. Reed and friends has been doing many reserches in that area and yes...they definitely in my list of reference!!!

well i am supposed to be practicing my professional bahasa melayu as my thesis will be in the language...but it has been a habit??? its my norm..to mix the language..further i kinda talk to myself except some small faithful audience or perhaps misdirected to this page...anyway to name a few, kak Jojo, Nad, Tariq, Ita, and few others yg tak tersebut nama tu terima kasih sangat2...

i've been browsing other bloggers the other day, some i have their links on the sidebar...some i haven't been able to link...teringat pulak cerita game pompuan evil..who's the weakest link kat UK dulu...anyway...haa...blogger2 yg maybe in similar position as me...ada yg guna nama mommyphD, mommyprof etc...they are obviously mummies who's in the academic line or/and undertaking phD...but the two mentioned is in kak jojo's line or maybe diverted a bit...literature or something i dunno...but if u reading this kak jojo, perhaps you wanna check it out coz useful information in those n perhaps you could use some of it or just sharing your thingy with them...most of them sort of 'complaining' not the right word but lebih kurang...their multi-tasking life...with kiddos, work and phD...so i'm not alone...

the thing is...nenet jay The Nanny...has been sick since tuesday..me myself brought her to clinic...so damean was with me on wednesday...my work can only be done about 15% when he is around, thursday nenet called saying she's ok so damean went to school, when i picked him in the evening, she's lying on the sofe...still looking sick...so decided to babysit my kiddo on the friday...although i promised Prof. to see him with the paper on Friday...and this time he actually asked about me to Nik n Ita...so???? when i'm deciding something, i always remind myself that i should be a mother first above all...so that what i did...but i have his bengang feeling towards my hubby...ye lah i know he's busy at work tapi pastu petang sport??? when he knows malam he has to go to silat...yes people...silat...c'mon gimme a break or two???? so that's all i wanna put down here...tokleh banyak2 nanti tuhan marah....ya rabbi yassir wa la tu 'asir ya rabbi akhtim bil khair!!!!!

Mike Griffin has written the Handbook of Human Vibration, which should definitely be on your bookshelf. My point was that nearly all of the work on ride and vibration for people in vehicles has focused on <20 Hz, which is likely to be below the range of frequencies with significant acoustic effects. So, you have a potentially ripe area. I've occasionally wondered if hearing higher harmonics of vibration tones (say, hearing a harmonic associated with a 15 Hz vibration) makes one more sensitive to the vibration. The big problem in the area is that people's subjective responses vary widely, which makes the experiments necessarily large.

malam ni lambat tido sebab dok making international calls to UK...cari accommodation tuk abah n mak yang dah nak gi sgt....dpt lah hotel cikai namanye hotel lily @ 23-33 Lilie Road, London SW6 1UG...tu nak ngabihkan duitku yg masih ada ciput kat UK...pehtu...yg teruknye dok call ke oxford...rupa2nya tokleh direct call kena thru operator...ate jenuh la pasal most hotels n b&b kat sana full...sebab student baru nak dtg...lupo lak den...aduh...amik ubat...last2 dpt la yg outskirt dr city center tapi ikut peta nih idak la jauh beno dlm 1-1.5 miles jer from St. Antony's College, tempat ASEASUK conference tuh....nama hotelnye Happylodge, 147, Oxford Road, Kidlington, Oxford..kire2nye daerah North Oxford...so they will be checking in kat london on the 13th, check out on the 15th...check in lak kat happylodge tuh 15th till 18th...its a short trip but hey...i hope they'll have fun though...me myself dah few times went to Oxford...tak masuk Bicester Village yg nearby...apa lagi shopping ler...damean pun pernah gi masa both in and outside mami's belly...

Pastikan anda memenuhi syarat-syarat asas terlebih dahulu, demi untuk menjamin PhD di tangan anda. Setelah syarat asas ini dipenuhi, barulah lain-lain usaha dapat dibuat sebagai kosmetik PhD anda.

PhD yang berkualiti tinggi hanya akan diperolehi sekiranya anda mampu membuat penyelidikan yang
berbentuk 3-Dimensi (bahasa mudahnya kalau anda memasak, masakannya mesti cukup rasa, kelihatan menyelerakan dan dihidang dengan cara yang betul). Thesis yang berkualiti tinggi, kebiasaannya memerlukan beberapa sumbangan novel di dalam thesis anda.

Happy Independence Day to all my fellow Malaysian...i'm proud to be Malaysian and thankful to God for the prosperity and health & ni'mat that he gave us all this while....anyway this independence day we went for a holiday like last year but this time 'oversea' and with a bigger group...

i will just post few photos instead of writing on and on about the journey etc.pictures say a thousand words..bottom line..it was a good holiday...we had fun and look forward for the next trip...

our weekend

our weekend was full with activities...saturday we went to akmal and amer's wedding...who??? anak pak long aim...the tent and giffts were splendid...but hey who can beat ct at least for another decade or so???? n i got the chance to meet Yanti's sister...sorry for what happened to er husband...

anyway...after the wedding we went to great eastern mall but we missed bob...and we found out that damean is afraid of air-slide...gayat rupenye anak mami nih....cian dia and lawaks gile...but i know he enjoyed the trip...i have to continue this later...damean meragam...(insert after balik medan!!!! ok finally only after we're back from medan...tonite we found out that our peti ais was not powered the whole weekend since rabu lah kan...and our washing m/c broke down...arrrrrrrgh xoxo)..some pictures from the week before this week...at midvalley with pooh...tu dapat amik gambar dia masuk kejap je kat tempat lompat2 tu....patutlah nangis...now we know...he gayat....kuang kuang kuang...anak mami gaya macho tapi gayat...takper sayang...u'll get over it!!

its almost two months now..me being a student....what is your progress lady!!!..plenty of paper...yet to be read and i need to come up with this paper about seat comfort + anthropometer + VDV...yeah also on its way

meanwhile life's been busy with other thngs as well...next week we'll fly to Medan...yup the lot; abah+mak+the 3 stooges+Us=8. That's a lot of money needed there!!! Last weekend we went to midvalley to catch winnie the pooh but h*** to many people...and my precious baby is just not in the mood....so we ended having lunch at Nando's and did little shopping...

This week also another bz weekend, today there's this important wedding that we have to go in keramat, then maybe take mama to ikea...i'm planning to discuss my kitchen thingy with the ikea people, then tomorrow maybe to iko's parents' in senawang to collect my book really....and to see them and to attend the wedding...maybe in th emorning coz later we want to catch bob the builder at great eastern mall...i prefer bob than winnie really...and i think my boy too...

second,i'm renovating our place - my dad's housewith very limited 'source'...anyway that's fine..but now nu problem...to clarify things with mpkj...so don't like it when in this situation...but hey that's life and its nothing really..just hope that people wanna work with me voluntarily and easily...amin. p.s. i support that the law be amended so that muslem in malaysia are more protected and they cannot simply change their religion and let the kaffir wins...but rest assured all my muslem brothers and sisters...God promises is true and justice will prevail..soon if not later!!!

DALAM perbincangan munakahat, ulama mengkategorikan tiga konflik utama yang dihadapi pasangan suami isteri. Dalam pergaulan mereka wujud ciri berikut:

NUSYUZ
Dilakukan oleh salah seorang daripada pasangan. Dapat dikesan melalui komunikasi pasangan, reaksi muka, wajah selamba atau tidak mahu bertentangan muka. Bercakap dengan kasar atau tidak mahu bertegur sapa, pura-pura tidak mendengar atau berkomunikasi melalui perantaraan.

SYIQAQ
Perselisihan faham suami isteri yang sudah sampai ke tahap saling cerca mencerca dan pukul memukul.

DHARAR
Penganiayaan suami seperti memukul dan mendera isteri, sedangkan isteri adalah wanita yang baik akhlak dan taat kepada suami.

Bagaimanakah MENANGANI konflik yang berlaku?

Sebenarnya dalam kehidupan sebagai suami isteri tidak lari daripada kemungkinan menghadapi ujian rumah tangga dalam bentuk konflik seperti nusyuz, dharar dan syiqaq.
Sekiranya keadaan konflik berlaku disebabkan isteri nusyuz, suami patut mengambil langkah seperti berikut:

Memberi nasihat kepada isteri dengan penuh kasih sayang.

Menyedarkan isteri mengenai tingkah laku yang dilakukan dan mengingatkan kesan itu kepada diri sendiri dan pasangan serta kedudukan sebagai hamba Allah. Hal ini kerana keredaan Allah ke atas isteri bergantung kepada keredaan suami kepadanya.

Sekiranya suami tidak bersedia memberi nasihat dengan cara itu, suami boleh membawa isteri mendapat khidmat nasihat daripada keluarga terdekat, sahabat yang dipercayai, orang berpengaruh dalam masyarakat atau tempat yang menyediakan khidmat kaunseling.

Sekiranya nasihat tidak memberi kesan untuk mengubah tingkah laku isteri, suami boleh membuat ta'dib kepada isteri. Iaitu memberi pengajaran dengan mengambil langkah berikut:

(a) Pisahkan tempat tidur hingga isteri meninggalkan nusyuznya;

(b) Tidak bertegur sapa tidak lebih tiga hari;

(c) Pukul dengan alat yang tidak memudaratkan anggota badan dan tidak pada muka (sekadar memberi ta'dib); dan

(d) Andainya isteri tidak menunjukkan perubahan, suami boleh membawa perkara ini ke Mahkamah Syariah untuk dibicarakan bagi mendapat keputusan mahkamah sama ada kes ini:

Boleh diselesaikan dengan baik (sulh) sama ada tinggal semula bersama atau bercerai dengan baik.

Dirujuk dengan hakam.

Sabitan nusyuz isteri, isteri akan hilang semua haknya sebagai isteri kecuali mengubah tingkah lakunya. Sekiranya isteri enggan, suami boleh menjatuhkan talak. Isteri dimaklumkan bahawa haknya mendapatkan mutaah dan nafkah idah akan gugur disebabkan nusyuz.

Sekiranya nusyuz pula berlaku di pihak suami dan dia enggan mengubah tingkah lakunya, isteri boleh membuat aduan kepada perunding keluarga atau mengemukakan kes mereka di Mahkamah Syariah untuk ditangani oleh pihak mahkamah. Ia bagi menentukan kehendak mereka sama ada berdamai dengan suami serta diperintahkan berlaku adil atau bercerai dengan talak biasa daripada suami atau tebus talak di pihak isteri.

Menangani konflik dalam bentuk syiqaq

Apabila keadaan hubungan suami isteri saling cerca mencerca, tuduh dan pukul memukul, alam perkahwinan menjadi medan pergaduhan. Tidak ada pihak yang dapat menasihati dan menerima nasihat daripada pasangan.

Konflik mereka perlu ditangani dengan kaedah seperti firman Allah bermaksud: "Dan jika kamu bimbangkan perpecahan antara mereka berdua (suami isteri) maka lantiklah orang tengah untuk mendamaikan mereka iaitu seorang daripada keluarga lelaki dan seorang daripada keluarga perempuan. Jika kedua-dua orang tengah itu dengan ikhlas bertujuan hendak mendamaikan, nescaya Allah akan menjadikan kedua-dua (suami isteri itu) berpakai baik. Sesungguhnya Allah sentiasa mengetahui, lagi amat mendalam pengetahuannya." (Surah an-Nisa', ayat 35)

Suami isteri yang menghadapi syiqaq perlu mengadakan sulh (perbincangan) yang dihadiri oleh wakil keluarga atau penasihat (kaunselor).

Sekiranya konflik mereka tidak mendapat jalan perdamaian, pasangan perlu membawa kes mereka ke mahkamah untuk ditangani pada peringkat mahkamah.

Seandainya mahkamah mendapati perbicaraan mereka menghadapi keadaan yang perlu dirundingkan pada peringkat suami isteri, mahkamah akan melantik seorang pengerusi untuk mengetuai perundingan wakil yang dilantik oleh suami isteri.

Selepas memperoleh beberapa keputusan, pengerusi akan memanggil suami isteri untuk dibicarakan semula bagi mensabitkan shiqaq. Jika sabit shiqaq, pasangan akan diminta membuat majlis tahkim yang dihadiri oleh wakil keluarga dan suami isteri untuk membuat beberapa keputusan sama ada berdamai dengan mengubah tingkah laku masing-masing atau bersetuju bercerai.

Keputusan mereka akan dibawa ke mahkamah untuk dibuat perintah mahkamah mengenai keputusan pasangan.

Menangani konflik dalam bentuk dharar

Apabila isteri mengalami penderaan atau penganiayaan daripada suami seperti dipukul, dikurung atau diabaikan nafkah zahir dan batin serta berlarutan daripada had nusyuz, langkah yang perlu isteri lakukan adalah mendapatkan saksi terhadap perbuatan itu. Pada masa sama, isteri perlu membuat laporan kepada polis, pegawai perubatan serta boleh membuat pengaduan ke mahkamah untuk dibicarakan.

certainly its a new era...stepping onto a higher ladder of education but the reality is looking back to strenghten the foundation of our own chosen knowledge...and make a new wing from the already sturated branch...what the hell i'm talking about...the truth is i'm clouded at this moment...emotionally that is...because realistically i'm still being considerate and thoughtful...i hate it very much everytime this happens in my life..i know it will come and go as long as i live with him...Dear God...Please give me strentgh and wisdom... God will teach me him and her. amin.

the title n what i'm going to write has nothing in common or maybe it has...its been a very long time since i wrote journal of me? and the first time to be published for 'others' to read...if any...since i'm 'suspending' my office/lecturing job for 'a whole newww wooorlllld'...so maybe i'll like this..writing here. From Izan's page...she shared a lot of her experiences as a phD student of >1 year...WOW...impressed by her wisdom+strength+etc...and WOW...thinking about my own journey ahead...why i'm doing it? now? here? with that supervisor? and that title??? ARRRRRGH...its so dark now...everything is still so dark and i'm not sure .... so not sure...i have this perfectionism in me and trying to be more optimistic..only one thing for comfort..that God is there for me...that's for sure...and my kiddo n my hubby n of course my not so-balanced-yet-normal-and-still-i-love-them family...i guess this is one of the reason why i said the 1st code is the hardest...in phD journey...no one can give you the answer but yourself...what you really want to do? your scope and objectives? and how are you going to do it?...like what Prof. Jai said during our 1st meeting since i've registered.." human always want it the easiest way..their way...they ask from God but they want God to give them there and then exactly as what they wanted. So who's the real god now? The human or The God???? God gives what he wills and when he wants it and to whom he chooses and in anyway that he wishes...kun fayakun! Astaghfirullah...that is so true and i'm not excluded..."so the moral of the story is ...we strive hard and better, smartly, do our best and pray never-endingly...and God will grant the wishes when its time - and that part is none of our business anymore...

And beside that story...Opot if you ever read this one day...i had a MOS yesterday to take out my right side wisdom tooth. It fully grown inside the gum and knocking the neighbouring tooth and the entire sytem and it hurts on and off so i was advised to pluck it out...i was very terrified and the destist actually asked me..Dr. Gopal Nair...he asked so are you ready physically n mentally and i answered nervously..NO...and he said but you come still...he he he...i think its more terrifying experience than give birth!!! Because its right there in your mouth and you can hear and imagine what they are doing although u can't feel the pain...and last night was terrible because blood mixed with my saliva and some i telan and twice i wake up and throw in the toilet...and this morning my face is like monalisa...improportioned and out of place...keh keh keh..

I pray for the wellbeing for the ummah of the world. I pray that i'll be capable to take and undergo any circumtances that i will face during my phD and hope there will always be guidance from you.
